MtG.sk Cup 2011

Hello, today we played our annual MtG.sk cup merged with Thibir's highlander. We had 41 players. Some of deck were pretty unusual to HL metagame (or strange builds).

Decklists as promised. Many players here in Slovakia don't have enough duals to support 4-5 colour manabases, so last year our metagame degenerated into 50% decks being red based aggros. So that's the reason why there are many strange cards in these decks However this year the top 8 was pretty diverse. So here you are:

The most player nonland card: Phyrexian Methamorph :-) six times in Top 8.

I player GWB Pattern Rector deck with reduced amount of tutors and cards good against controls and added anti-aggro solutions. I went 4:0:2 through 6 rounds of swiss and lost to the winner in quarterfinals.

Round 1 - Random kid with budget UB control

I won 2:0 not much to write about. No FoW, duals, fetchlands, I just played creatures and attacked.

Round 2 - Boros

Game 1: He got me under the pressure soon, then he played Ronom Unicorn + Kami of Ancient Law and unintentionally preventing me from going to conscript. I stabilized situation with Sofi at 4 life.  He got only Isamaru and bonesplitter on board, I got swordbearer elf + 3 chumpblockers. He topdecked Parallax Wave (it could be either this or char)and killed me.
Game 2: Mother of runes on the first turn, Magus of the moon on the third. There were Elves of Deepshadow, Avecyn's Pilgrim and 4 nonbasics on the my side of table. I had mana open for Eladamri's call in response, however shriekmaw would be useless, so I went for academy rector. Opponent not knowing my deck allowed me to chump block with it, Conscript Elf and kill him with 2 swings. He topdecked Ronom Unicorn after the first one, but didn't have white mana because of magus (There you go, you pesky nonbasic hater! )
Game 3: was short one, opponent mulliganed to 6, kept hand with 2 lands, never drew more.

Round 3 - Mono red

Game 1: Opponent kept hand with one mountain and 3 one drops. He almost got me, however wall of blossoms into wall of roots were enough to buy some time.
Game 2: Was swift. When I played Loxodon Hierarch I got Flames of the blood hand into face, so instead 14 I was all of sudden at 6. I got fried as soon as he untapped.
Game 3: Opponent kept slower hand. I got SDT, to search for lifegain, he tried to cripple my manabase by avalanche riders, however it was me, who vindicated his mountain to prevent him from paying echo and next turn I wastelanded his Barbarian ring, stealing his 2 dmg and third land. Soon the game was over.

Round 4 - Angelfire

Both me and brother had 3:0 score, so we did a math and decided that 4:1:1 should be enough to get into top8, and both of us should be able to win one round of two.

Round 5 - Mono U(w)

Game 1: I won the roll, started with Noble Hierarch in t1, Tidehollow Sculler in t2 and Cabal Therapy in t3. Then I just killed him with my guys.
Game 2: Mana dork, duress, sack dork, natural order, 2 land and Gaea's Cradle. Let's move on.

Round 6 - Tie

Quarterfinals - Bant

Game 1: 4th turn kill again.
Game 2: He managed to get me under the preasure (I didn't know he wasn't playing any counter magic), so I spent valuable time and tutors just to search for Tidehollow sculler or Mesmeric fiend. Then, one turn before death I hardcasted Pattern with active sac outlet, just to have my target exiled by StP (obv it wasn't there, when I checked his hand).
Game 3: Sad story. I kept: Sensei's top, scrubland, dryad arbor, t-seize, cabal therapy, goyf and fauna shaman. Guess what. No lands in top 6 cards :-)


Brother was able to kill Simic Mage, however goblins were too much (he kept hand: 3lands, path to exile, stoneforge mystic, aven riftwatcher, wrath of god and still managed to lose. his manabase was entirely destroyed, never had more than 2 lands in play :-) )
