Title: MG Aggro
Post by: grizzledmage on 29-10-2008, 11:18:27 PM
Yes even though I haven't the time to dedicate to the online league (I am seeing these reports of single games going for up to an hour - wow), I still play regularly with my sons and local people.

Anyway, I have never seen or heard of a mono G aggro deck in this format, and am curious to see if it has any potential. Here is a decklist that I have devised but not yet tested:

// Deck file for Magic Workstation

// Lands (38)
    1 Wasteland
    1 Treetop Village
    1 Pendelhaven
1 Temple of the False God
    31 Forest
    1 Tranquil Thicket
    1 Slippery Karst
    1 Yavimaya Hollow

// Creatures (43)
    1 Rhox
    1 Troll Ascetic
    1 Talara's Battalion
    1 Seedborn Muse
    1 Roughshod Mentor
    1 Verdant Force
    1 Primalcrux
    1 Oversoul of Dusk
    1 Overbeing of Myth
    1 Masked Admirers
    1 Vexing Shusher
    1 Vigor
    1 Wilt-Leaf Cavaliers
    1 Wilt-Leaf Liege
    1 Woodfall Primus
    1 Rhox Charger
    1 Drumhunter
    1 Spearbreaker Behemoth
    1 Garruk Wildspeaker (planeswalker)
    1 Llanowar Elves
    1 Boartusk Liege
    1 Fyndhorn Elves
    1 Spectral Force
    1 Murkfiend Liege
    1 Sakura-Tribe Elder
    1 Jugan, the Rising Star
    1 Chameleon Colossus
    1 Eternal Witness
    1 Birds of Paradise
    1 Bloom Tender
    1 Kitchen Finks
    1 Boggart Ram-Gang
    1 Briarhorn
    1 Cloudthresher
    1 Doomgape
    1 Drove of Elves
    1 Elvish Piper
    1 Hag Hedge-Mage
    1 Giant Solifuge
    1 Krosan Cloudscraper
    1 Nettle Sentinel
    1 Symbiotic Wurm
    1 Tarmogoyf
    1 Ravenous Baloth

// Other Spells (19)
    1 Lightning Greaves
    1 Break Asunder
    1 Hurricane
    1 Slate of Ancestry
    1 Wildsize
    1 Gaea's Anthem
    1 Rancor
    1 Regrowth
    1 Harmonize
    1 Privileged Position
    1 Kodama's Reach
    1 Might of Old Krosa
    1 Giant Growth
    1 Primal Command
    1 Worldly Tutor
    1 Tooth and Nail
    1 Sensei's Divining Top
    1 Krosan Grip

Some random comments...

I have tried to include a few ways to "cheat" the bigger creatures into play (Elvish Piper, Tooth and Nail).

Mana accel is obviously key, so BoP, Llanowar/Fyndhorn Elves, Drumhunter (good when the big boys are in play also), Sakura-Tribe Elder, Kodama's Reach, Bloom Tender (great with the hybrid mana cards around; still solid even without)

I am kind of on the fence on the battle tricks (Giant Growth, Might of Old Krosa, Wildsize) but goldfishing so far - both solitaire and against other HL decks - suggests that they may have merit.

Obviously a lot of recent cards; as I think we're all aware WotC has been very good to Green over the past couple of years. And some of the hybrid mana cards seem interesting to me in this context as well.

Anyway, I would be very appreciate of any/all comments and criticisms.

MG-Aggro is quite strong in my opinion! But your build looks like a MG-Control to me  ??? ;D it isn't aggroish at all  ;) Stuff like Tooth and Nail, Priviledge Position or Symbiotic Wurm and many more aren't strong enough to find its place in an aggro build. MG will always lose the long game ;) so obviousely you have to win quite fast :)

MG-Aggro!!!
85%+ should be 1-3 mana spells, the rest stuff like Yavimaya Ants, Phantom Centaur, Blastoderm, Giant Solifuge, Briarhorn - max. 1-2 5 mana spells.

+ Dryad Sophisticate
+ Boas
+ Wild Mongrel
+ lots of cheap battle tricks
+ Moldervine Cloak
+ Elephant's Guide
+ Groundbreaker
+ Lots of Mana-Elves
+ Imperious Perfect

You will see that MG-Aggro is able to kill turn 5-6 and you have to if you wanna win :-)

Sorting the deck by curve would be nice. If you did that, I could give some suggestions - and propable you'd see some bottlenecks and weak spots yourself as well.

I would cut down anything with cmc higher than 4, your large creatures don´t have a chance against survival driven combo, gift fueled engine or just simple stroke of genius. I thint that only way to win with MGA is to stomp opponent ASAP.

I would add a lot of one drops:

Wild dogs, Ghazban Ogre, Tattermunge Maniac, Basking rootwala, Jungle lion, (maybe Mtenda lion), Quirion Ranger, Rogue Elephant, Skarrgan-Pit Skulk, Skyshroud Elite.

As to other spells try Land Grant, Bounty of the Hunt, Berserk is must, maybe even Rootmaze may slow many decks down...

100% agree  ;D

All good suggestions. I would definately add the red marked ones.

As to other spells try Land Grant, Bounty of the Hunt, Berserk is must, maybe even Rootmaze may slow many decks down...

Sure if you have a copy of Beserk add it  ;D land Grant + Bounty of the Hunt sounds good to me too

As usual, some excellent feedback here.

Question...

But your build looks like a MG-Control to me

I'm not even sure what you mean here... is it that the deck seems too slow and ponderous, thereby giving it control-like feel?

I think that I will keep this deck for now and try it out against locals (just for fun) and will incorporate your suggestions into a second (presumably more competitive?) deck. I'll post the new decklist thereafter. (If I don't get to it by the end of today, it will then be a week or more as I will be traveling on business almost all of next week.)

BTW, keeping your suggestions in mind, I'm also looking at cards like Pouncing Jaguar, Albino Troll, Argothian Wurm (?-maybe effective if can play by turn 4 or 5), Silhana Ledgewalker...?

i completely agree with most of the comments. You should definitely cut some of the bigger CMC cards. Jugan the rising star, krosan cloudscraper? you have a lot of sub-optimal cards. you should add those 1/2 drops.

Also i noticed is that u run a lot of lands 31+7.. i play 5CC and play with 39 so a MG aggro should play a lot less, specially if you play with the "new" mulligan.

Gaes cradle, no?

Like vazdru said, you should be winning by turn 5/6 ;)

That's my more aggroish MG-Stampede I've built tonight. I think the differences to grizzledmage's approach are easy to discover.   Quirion Ranger + Skyshroud Elite still missing, maybe i add Spectral Force and or Silvos somewhere as finisher.

In my personal opinion grizzelmage wanted to play some timmy cards ... and I do rly see a way to do this ... I remember a Elves Deck that was mono green and the elves were more or less the mana boost and in addition a little army so he ramped very very fast his mana tutored for a big guy and won ... don t know maybe that could help ... I lost pretty bad against this deck with my MB-suicide ...to much blockers and to fast creatures with pro black .. just remeber he layed down in 1 turn Phantom Centaure and Chameleon Colossus ... he also played Silos .. the Oversoul of Dusk ... hope I could give some ideas

well, at the pro tour the elf decks can easily cast predator dragon. However a MG aggro is different from a rampant deck. I can also see it a mix of rG elfball kind of deck, with lots of mana elfs + untap effects + fireball (and cousins) + fatties. But this goes a different way that a MG aggro, he should have lots of land fetchers and all creture tutor available. but i dont know if he just wanted a stompy kind of deck or just a deck that easily cast a fattie on turn 4/5

isn´t Wickerbough Elder slightly better than indrik? i can work exactly like indrik, however you can cast it with only 4 mana. only disadvantage of Wickerbough Elder over indrik is creature type, but as you are not running Ravenous Baloth, it doesn´t matter :)

I would like to play also Kavu predator + invigorate. invigorate is good alone. predator has decent numbers and can help to keep opponents life gain from being real buggar :)

have anybody ever tried Skyshroud War Beast? I like this card very much, but I haven´t tested it yet. I think it should be "Lesser Goyf." Of course not in skies matchup.

As I indicated, I was away for a week on business, and am just this morning checking this thread again. There are yet some more excellent suggestions here which I will undoubtedly incorporate, but in the meantime:

// Lands (34)
    1 Tranquil Thicket
    28 Forest
    1 Yavimaya Hollow
    1 Wasteland
    1 Pendelhaven
    1 Treetop Village
    1 Slippery Karst

// Creatures (44)
    1 Blastoderm
    1 Wild Mongrel
    1 River Boa
    1 Mire Boa
    1 Skarrgan Pit-Skulk
    1 Twinblade Slasher
    1 Basking Rootwalla
    1 Skyshroud Elite
    1 Mtenda Lion
    1 Jungle Lion
    1 Boreal Druid
    1 Garruk Wildspeaker
    1 Wall of Roots
    1 Uktabi Drake
    1 Silhana Ledgewalker
    1 Wren's Run Vanquisher
    1 Scryb Ranger
    1 Dryad Sophisticate
    1 Imperious Perfect
    1 Kitchen Finks
    1 Giant Solifuge
    1 Chameleon Colossus
    1 Wilt-Leaf Liege
    1 Wilt-Leaf Cavaliers
    1 Troll Ascetic
    1 Boggart Ram-Gang
    1 Talara's Battalion
    1 Tarmogoyf
    1 Vexing Shusher
    1 Fyndhorn Elves
    1 Llanowar Elves
    1 Nettle Sentinel
    1 Pouncing Jaguar
    1 Bloom Tender
    1 Tattermunge Maniac
    1 Eternal Witness
    1 Birds of Paradise
    1 Drove of Elves
    1 Murkfiend Liege
    1 Briarhorn
    1 Ravenous Baloth
    1 Spectral Force
    1 Masked Admirers
    1 Boartusk Liege
    1 Sakura-Tribe Elder

// Spells (22)
    1 Might of Oaks
    1 Elephant Guide
    1 Call of the Herd
    1 Moldervine Cloak
    1 Kodama's Reach
    1 Lightning Greaves
    1 Symbiosis
    1 Ferocious Charge
    1 Bounty of the Hunt
    1 Might of Old Krosa
    1 Giant Growth
    1 Rancor
    1 Gaea's Anthem
    1 Harmonize
    1 Sensei's Divining Top
    1 Krosan Grip
    1 Wildsize
    1 Worldly Tutor
    1 Break Asunder
    1 Hurricane
    1 Loxodon Warhammer

As you can see, I have included many of vazdru's suggestions here, with some differences based both on card availability and personal preference. (Note that I did not include Vidian Zealot because I was dismayed to find I had none, but Wickerborough Elder is one I also missed and will likely include that as well.)

Yes it is true that my original build at the top of this thread was intended to get fatties into play quickly, but I am not emotionally tied to that theme, and this sort of build should be just as much fun to play. As I indicated earlier, there is a good chance I may put such a deck together anyway... again, for the fun of it.

Break Asunder I am very iffy on. That slot keeps flipping back and forth for Slate of Ancestry, but I am really not sure about it. If I do go with Wickerborough Elder, then BA is less likely to stay in.

Some playtesting with the current build online against random players has been reasonably, but not overwhelmingly, encouraging. One very interesting matchup was against a monoW weenie build; it was almost a mirror at least in deck tempo and feel, and the other fellow was able to pull out the 3rd and final game in a very close match.

ok, now it looks a lot more with a Mono aggro G.
Altough i´d cut a bit on the lands, 34 still seems a lot. how do you feel about his? have u had any mana screw/flood?

I´ve played against one of those and lost 3-0 :P just too fast for my 5cc.

Jury still out on land count. Some games I am hurting for enough mana; others I have more G available than I know what to do with. I am sure that more playtesting will reveal the correct approach. FWIW, after playing a deck like UW Clouded Skies, which runs significantly fewer lands (26 if memory serves correctly), that number is clearly too low, so - from a scientific standpoint - the right number is somewhere between 26 and 34 inclusive (although that is  large range).

Also, the tempo seems to vary a lot from game to game... sometimes it comes charging out like crazy, which of course is the idea, but in others - too many, really - I can't get things really going until the 4th/5th turn or so, and that's usually way too slow to be a real threat.

I've played 9-4 recently with the deck mentioned above.

Best game was vs. Payron:

1st: Forest - Jungle Lion
2nd: Forest - Attack for 2 (Payron 18) - Tattermunge Maniac - Payron plays Turn 2 Survival!!!
3rd: Forest - Groundbreaker - Attack for 10 (Payron 8 ) - Payron random Critter + Survival for Wall of Roots
4th: Forest - Seal of Strenght - Attack with Tattermunge + Lion - unblocked one + Seal + Giant Growth (Payron 0)

Another good one vs Mythrandir while he had 7 or 8 non-basics out i played a "2-Turn-Clock" Primal Order :P

Anybody adding Great Sable Stag to his MGA deck? (I just opened my first one, so now I can consider it!) If so, what card does it replace?

i believe, yes. having protection from black is huge, i would replace it for one of the higher CMC, which, i dunno. Either that or snakeform.

Deck looks fun :) But I think you could add some more mana engines, Llanowar, Fyndhorn, Noble hierarch, Bird of Paradise etc. and land tutors which put land into the play (Yavimaya Granger, Farhaven Elf...).

Other fun and good cards could be:
Deranged Hermit
Rancor
Boggard Ram-Gang
Boartrusk Liege
Vexing Susher
Acidic Slime
SPAWNWRITHE!!!!!!
Wickerbough Elder
Briarhorn
Might of Oaks
Overrun
Berserk
Thelonite Hermit (not good but)
Stampeding Serow - nice with comes into play effects :)
Mycoloth
Reach of Branches - picture is just so good :) - Recycle "combo" ;P
Skyshroud Poacher
Call of the Herd
Chameleon Colossus
River and Mire Boa
Dryad Sophisticate
Sylvan Scrying
Nature`s Spiral
Thornling
Iwamaro, of the Open fist
Phantom Centaur

Some more LD cards: Winter`s Grasp, Thermokarst, Ice Storm. - These are nice on second or third turn but might be horrible in late games.

Theres also that one creature tutor from Visions or Weatherlight (?) that lets you to find any green creature from your deck and put it into play. You only have to sacrifice one green creature for it.

Theres just something I got into my mind :)

natural order may be nice add, im really thinking about adding it to the deck...
and i dont really want to play mono g aggro because one friend of mine is already playing it like that so i was thinking about slower mana ramping deck...

I think you need some good blockers or atleast some mana engines which make your deck more suitable. Now it looks too slow for everything, even it looks fun. Bop, Llanowars etc takes a spot from something else in your deck, but with that mana curve (without really any draw machines) it won`t won many tournament games, I think. Now your deck has just two first turn drops.

Since I just happened to throw together a mono-green deck for the new (Zendikar) Standard, there is at least one card that I believe would be excellent in this format: Primal Bellow, in place of one of the less efficient battle tricks (like maybe Giant Growth).

Vines of Vastwood seems like a possible candidate as well.

Other thoughts on new Zendikar card that could have a place in MGA HL?

I think vines is must add. primal is usuly giant growth or instant good might of krosa (Which i both play so ill add it). Im gona test cobra but with out fetches its weaker still i think its card im gona add. then there is that 4/4 beast trap.
Title: Re: MG Aggro
Post by: GoblinPiledriver on 08-10-2009, 05:19:33 PM
Vines is is perfect, shroud and +4/+4 are very good.
But the Beast Trap seems not to be reliable. Doy you really want to keep 2 mana open like a counter, waiting for a artifact which doesn't get hurt. Or do you want to play a 4/4 beast for 5 mana whichs ambushes a creature. This is not a  card for a aggro deck. It's more a sideboard card for constructed or a good limited pick.
Title: Re: MG Aggro
Post by: Anime1 on 08-10-2009, 07:36:58 PM
Well the cards idea was prety much its 2 mana 4/4 against control and ambush against aggro. Well im probely not gona play it as im trying to drop all cards that cost more than 4 and ain´t hurricane.

Sorry for the dumb question, but how exactly does this deck work; I mean, if you hear about WW or RDW, it's really easy to imagine, but this is slightly harder, due to the higher mana curve. Basically, you want to play a lot of Mana creatures - but what for, I still don't get, because WW doesn't have this kind of Mana Acceleration either. Why not just play the deck with a very, very low curve but no Mana Accel? What point am I missing here?

imho, the white have better creatures on the low curve (isamaru, lions vs. any green 1 drop) and it is great on 2 mana slot (soltari priest, monk, serra avenger, whipcorder etc.), but I think, that best green creatures come on 3 a 4 mana slot. so you want to accelerate to 3 manas on turn two to play your Troll Ascetic or Boggart Ram Gang :) or play Blastoderm on turn 3...

btw: has anybody of you ever tested Riding the Dilu Horse? :) I still cannot decide whether to buy it or not :)

And well most green creatures have some kinda build in protections or just wins if not dealt whit fast which not so meny white creatures have. And if you play against mono white if they don't draw meny removal those 3-4 drops easely overpower those 1 drops and 2 drops if you drop them turn 2-3.

sidenote i think nettle sentinel beats isamaru in this deck most of the time.

Omnath? Wolfbriar Elemental might be decent, as well.
Title: Re: MG Aggro
Post by: Anime1 on 06-02-2010, 04:18:47 PM
Haven't tried but seems kinda mana hungry. Then again Wolfbriar Elemental is ok whit just 4 mana.
Title: Re: MG Aggro
Post by: Helle on 06-02-2010, 06:29:18 PM
Wolfbriar Elemental is too expansive. You don't want a cc4 4/4 vanilla. Its decent for 5 and starts beeing good for cc6+. Thats too expansive I think.

Omnath on the other hand could make it. It starts attacking as 4/4 and could grow even bigger. If it gets destroyed in combat step on the other hand really sucks.
Title: Re: MG Aggro
Post by: Anime1 on 06-02-2010, 09:31:36 PM
Ravenous balloth is usuly not much more that 4/4 vanilla, but still im probely not gonna play Elemantal.
For me omnath dosen't seem that good unless you have Rofellos or Cradle and its some times even problem to get 3 green mana.

Hey,
i suggest cutting Giant Solifuge. It doesn´t really work well with battle tricks. Ok it has haste but you can play concordant crossroads or something like that to fill the gap when you don´t have the time to wait and want to attack imediatly.
Title: Re: MG Aggro
Post by: GoblinPiledriver on 14-02-2010, 01:38:41 PM
Well Concoordant Crossroads is also bad with Combat Tricks.
Giant Solifuge  is good against Maze of Ith and Spot Removal, so this card works efficient against control, and bad against midrange and  aggro.
It depends on the metagame wheter to cut or not.
I would add Letherback Behemoth, Arbor Elf, Omnath and would only cut the Giant Solifuge if there is no space for it anymore.

Whats the matter with x-roads and battletricks?
Title: Re: MG Aggro
Post by: GoblinPiledriver on 14-02-2010, 07:17:42 PM
Concordant Crossroads is not a creature so you cant use combat tricks on it.

The main problem with Crossroads is that it also gives your opponents creatures haste. So you could easily get disadvantage of it.

Post by: Asmahasmalaria on 16-02-2010, 12:31:07 PM
Good point, that means it´s problematic against agro but awesome against control.

I created a MG Agro myself and i can highly recommend Static Orb, since you´re playing garruk, nettle sentinel, mana elves and winter orb. If you decide to take it in I would also add quirion ranger - it´s a lot of fun together with one of the orbs and garruk. Tangle Wire works also well.

Oh and I have some battletrick-suggestions:
Groundswell
Symbiosis
Sword of Fire and Ice (ok not really a battle trick but it does the job anyway)

Another really funny card is Khalni Garden. There is nothing more hillarious than to beat the living crap out of your oponent with a 0/1 Plant and battle tricks :D
Title: Re: MG Aggro
Post by: Anime1 on 16-02-2010, 10:58:02 PM
Well i have played couple of games with Groundswell and omnath for me they have been bad.
I would play swords if i had them and i woudn't cut solifuge.
Title: Re: MG Aggro

Groundswell becomes really nice if you have scryb ranger or qurion ranger, give it a thought
Title: Re: MG Aggro
Post by: Anime1 on 18-02-2010, 11:15:31 AM
I don't play ranger because deck is alredy full of 1/1 and whit out those Groundswell is usuly +2/+2 or forces you to play it instead of creature.

Imo, both Might of old krosa and Vines of vastwood are better than Groundswell. I usually stop at three lands and it could be quite difficult to get landfall in fourth or fifth turn...
Title: Re: MG Aggro
Post by: Asmahasmalaria on 19-02-2010, 02:36:25 PM
Well actually I play them all^^
For me it´s not a choice between them and 3 lands are enough with one of both rangers to play groundswell turn 4,5,6,...
only thing is it does only work in your own turn
