Nastaboi (UWb-Control) vs. Vazdru (4c Blood)

1st: i've won the roll and kept a medicore hand with Lightning Bolt, Lightning Helix, Domri, FtK and three lands on the play, he takes a free mulligan and kept afterwards a risky hand with one-lander + Ancestral Vision...and missed the second land in his next two draw steps, so Domri resolved while he had Memory Lapse and Logic Knot in hand. Domri reveals Sin Collector and he missed land drop again, next turn Sin Collector revealed the two mentioned cards among StP, Merchant Scroll, Else I, Jace Architect and Kitchen Finks while Merchant Scroll got exiled. As i've drawn Maelstrom Pulse, Golgari Charm and Garruk Relentless but no forth land the game wasn't completly decided ...but next turn when he missed land drop the forth time in a row and i've got Plains for Garruk Relentless, Collector hits for 2. Ancestral resolved, he played Plains + Wall of Omens and discarded some cards...I played FtK and attaked for 4, he played Island and sent Kavu to Plowshares. He countered Lili, but got another 6 damaged letting him drop to 8 lp already. Another wolf for 8 damage on the table + 2 planeswalker + 2x 3 direct damage in hand gave him no outs anymore.

0:1

to be continued

replays:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3561032/HLL%20Ladder/Gerry/Vazdru%20Round%201.zip

2nd: He kept 2 Islands, Wall of Omens, Snapcaster, Shakles, FoW, Elspeth Sun, i rejected 5 lander to have following hand: 2 lands, Ooze, Demonic, SoFI, Lili + Vithian Renegades. He gets Tundra into Wall of Omens T2 while I've played Scavenging Ooze. He plays Shakles, i miss 3rd land but got Deathrite Shaman from the top. He tries to take control of DRS and i path him to fetch a Swamp. Next turn I have Renegades which got forced. I got Reclamation Sage from the Top to get rid of nasty artifact. Eot the plays Mystical Teachings into Fact or Fiction. I play Knight otR and his Fact revealed two piles: Brainstorm/Serum Visions vs. Island, Else I, Explovives - he took the last one. Detention Sphere takes Knight out of game. I stuck still on three lands and added Fauna Shaman to the board. Scavening Ooze took care of Mystical Teachings. He plays EE for 2 and pass the turn, in my eot step he sacced EE as i discarded Finks into Eternal Witness. He plays eot Mystical Tutor into Treasure Cruise. In his turn he played Finks which started attacking after Elspeth gave it some wings. From now on he countered my relevant spells and won with Finks + Elspeth with 7 lands in play while I've had still 3 (2 from the beginning and 1 from Pathing my own creature) which means i didn't draw a single land out of about a dozen cards.

1:1

3rd: I kept a nice hand with 2 fetchlands, Inquisition, Hymn to Tourach, Lili, Path to Exile and Loxodon Smiter. Inquisition discards Swords to Plowshares and reveals 3 lands, Negate, Gideon Jura and Dig Through Time. Hymn hit Fetchland + Negate next turn. Missed one land drop and then played Smiter. He plays Treasure Cruise. I played Lili and attacked with Smiter, which got killed by Gideon. Lili started to discard some cards leaving me with an empty hand after i've killed Gidon with Vindicate and played Thrun. He played Restoration Angel end of turn and topdecked Elspeth Sun to get rid of Thrun. I topdecked Bloodbraid Elf but missed playable card (Abrupt Decay). BB Elf killed Elspeth and now i've had the options let him sacrifice Angel or discard his last card (Dig Through Time). I've chosen discard and passed the turn. He found Kitchen Finks and Restoration Angel put Lili down to one. He had the better board position and i haven't drawn anything relevant.

2:1

4th: my opening hand revealed 5x CC1 + 2 lands: Vial, Birds, Duress, Lightning Bolt, Inquisition - i pondered to mulligan but kept this in hope for some good follow-ups. Vial got countered by Mental Misstep. T2 i play Inquisition and Birds. Inquisition took Spell Snare leaving him with Augur of Bolas, Wrath, Terminus, Batterskull and 2 lands (while he had one in play). T3 i play GSZ for Knight of the Reliquary which transformed Plains into Wasteland a turn later leaving him with 2 Mana in play. Furthermore Duress took Demonic (new cards: Jace Beleren). Knight was already 5/5 but i used it eot for fetching Treetop Village to attack with the army a turn later which wasn't a bad idea as he got Swords to Plowshares meanwhile. I've got Eternal Witness and Ooze for some preasure while he stuck on 2 lands. When he played Jace i added Ajani Vengeant to keep 3rd land tapped. Nevertheless he vindicated Ajani a turn later but i've had Falkenrath Aristocrat "in response". As Treetop already made a good job he was on 1 lp after Aristocrats swing. He played Snapcaster for StP Aristocrats but i still had Lightning Bolt to finish this one.

2:2

5th: he kept 5-lander with Preordain and Sphinx Revelation, i rejected my first 7 (4 lands, Swords, Tainted Pact, Garruk Relentless) and had Pilgrim, Hymn, Garruk Wildspeaker afterwards. T1 Preordain found Shakles, i started with Pilgrim into T2 Anafenza but he had Karakas, T3 i played Garruk + Hymn which let him discard Island + Negate after Shakles entered the zone - the forth Island was needed to take control of Anafenza with Shakles. So he took pilgrim with Shakles and attacked my lands with Edge + Bounce Anafenza with Karakas before it could attack again. I've played Lingering Souls + Beast-Token instead of 4 Spirits + option for Garruk's Overrun next turn in fear of a sweeper. Councils Judment took care of Shakles and Garruk went back to 4 loyality. As he had no sweeper but Wall of Omens + Lingering Soouls I had Garruk's ultimate next turn for the win.

2:3

thx for the ggs!

Payron (UWb Control) vs. MaQi (4c Blood)
1:3

Games went 0:1 (Eternal Witness and Helix team up to destroy Jace TMS), 0:2 (curve into Garruk), 1:2 (counter into counter into b2b), 1:3 (can't remember. Screw on payrons side).

interesting, the two top-seeded players both took UWb-Control but 4c Blood took the lead (2:0 / 6:3)
I expect some more 4c Blood players vs. Control - maybe captain-kaiiak and/or goblinpiledriver ...lets wait and see

Well nobody can win with screw... I think 4c blood had 3 of 4 games more landdrops then me, with 35 to 37 lands :-/
Title: Re: Ladder Tournament 2014 - Reports

Theoretically, the matchup should be something like 55/45 in favor of Blood imo.

It takes a lot of practice though because there are many non-obvious decisions to be made by the Blood pilot (for example, knowing when to play around countermagic and when not to, how to sequence spells, and which creatures to tutor for when there's no obvious choice etc.).

These things can easily be messed up and even a wrongly fetched land on turn 2 or so may break the game for you.

That being said, the UWb godhand beats the Blood godhand usually. But over the course of many games, I feel that the average draw of blood is better than the average draw of the UWb deck.

Post by: Payron on 26-01-2015, 06:02:28 PM
Imo the blood mu vs blood with my uwb ist pretty good would go with 65/35. It is one of the least feared matchups, but well with no mana every deck fails.
I did choose my uwb version for that reasom because i expected alot off blood.
Title: Re: Ladder Tournament 2014 - Reports
Post by: Vazdru on 26-01-2015, 10:49:30 PM
the match-up UWb vs Blood imo strongly depends on the built and the pilot
I must confess I expected Nastaboi playing Control or Combo and modified my Top 8 list from the last GP slightly towards anti-control; especially because ChristophO is a possible opponent in Semis and he will never ever play aggro  ;) that's why I've added cards like Destructive Reverlery / Vithian Renegades / Sin Collector which I wouldn't automatically play in 4c Blood but aren't that bad in a mirror-match as well
although, rather because I thought Nastaboi would play something controllish i took Blood and MaQi did obvioulsy the same as he expected you to play your UWb-Control from Berlin Masters i bet
so from our experience Blood more or less have that 55:45 matchup vs UWb-Control although MaQi lost semis in Hanau exactly against Marcus F Esper / UWb-Control (btw. he lost amongst other because he haven't drawn lands and had to take too many mulligans ;))

btw. in G4 vs Nastaboi I pondered a while what I have to take with T3 Green Sun's Zenith - four cards came into my mind: Anafenza, Eternal Witness, Knight of Reliquary or Courser, in the end i decided betweeen Anafenza (aggo-plan) and KotR (screw-plan), i guess if I would have taken the wrong turn-off at that point, Nastaboi would have won that game and the match 3:1...and believe me, I often take the wrong one  ;) keeping this in mind for a sec...so if you are playing vs Blood in your play-group and have like 65:35 i doesn't automatically means UWb vs Blood has 65:35

If you think 4cBlood has alot of play to it and is highly skill rewarding you need a reality check. "Sequencing spells the right way" is something every deck needs to maximize its power, but when comparing 4cBlood  (a tap out deck, that is just full of "good" cards) to other decks, especially the ones with blue ,it is not a deck that rewards high skill.

@tonytahiti - food for thought:

Regarding the complexity of decisions in the UW(x)-4c Blood matchup:

a) UWb's reactivity/Flash-ness/Instants lead to easier decisions because they lend you the ability to wait for your opponents actions and then react accordingly.

b) 4c Blood's proactivity/Sorcery-ness/permanents lead to decisions that have to be made upon assumptions of what your opponent could have and are therefore made in an environment of uncertainty.

In this matchup there is - on a fundamental level - an asymmetric distribution of information, which will typically lead to the UW(x)'s player's decisions being easier.

Point a) actually is a strategic advantage that almost all blue-based decks share. And that is a (major) reason, why blue is such a strong color. In this regard, 4c Blood has a strategic weakness in the matchup.

Note however, the points I made are explicitly in terms of the UW(x)-4c Blood matchup and I do not make a statement about the complexity of decisions in other matchups.

some remarks to quarterfinal piledriver vs hamsert

g1: hamsert has chosen some unlucky lines of play imo, most important in g3 seems for me to handle sylvan caryatid so instead of playing B2B he probably should have used Mana Drain to counter next spell and then clear the board with Rolling Earthquake leaving piledriver with just one or two lands. Another crucial play was suspending Visions + play Ruination (destroying one land) instead of playing Tundermaw Hellkite to kill Ajani right from the spot - afterwards he never got the chance anymore to play the Dragon because ajani kept second mountain tapped - ruination hadn't any bigger impact on the board and Visions never resolved
imo G1 should be a clear win for Izzet but hamsert wasn't in good shape that day otherwise he would have been the winner of g1 imo

g2: risiky hand with no mountains and no cantrips + Dack Fayden, i guess he should take a free Mulligan because he will loose vs an average 4C Blood draw even he is more lucky to find a mountain for Ruination and/or PoP earlier

g3: just unlucky vs good draws of piledriver

Goblin Piledriver(4C-Blood)  vs  Maqi(4C-Blood)
3:2

We played Saturday at 15:00, but I couldn't post the report till now.

Game1:
On my startinghand I saw 4 Lands with a Wasteland but whithout a red source and 2 red cards which were Arc Trail and FTK, the final playable card was Vindicate. Maqi had taken his Free-Mulligan, so I kept this hand for destroying his mana base twice. As I destroyed his Raging Ravine with my Wasteland Maqi had only another land on hand. The next 2 turn I played Knight of the Reliquary, while Maqi drawed 2 lands in a row and played Qasali Pridemage and Lingering Souls. Turn 4 I played Doran and Maqi destroys my Knight with a Maelstrom Pulse. Maqi played Falkenrath Aristocrat and increased the pressure. I answered with an Arc Trail for a Spirit + Qasali Pridemage, and with an Aven Mindcensor. The following play wof Maqi were Courser of Kruphix and flashback Lingering Spirits. I can answer the Courser with a FTK and play a Birds of Paraidse for blocking Falkenrath Aristocrat. The next crucial play came from Maqi's side by playing Bloodbraid Elf cascading into Liliana of the Veil, which let me only Doran and FTK. As I were down on 3 life I topdecked Thundermaw Hellkite which destroys 2 Spirits and brought Maqi down to exactly one life. In this attack phase I didn't attack with my FTK or Doran for having a reserve for the case that Maqi topdecks another lethal card or had already one as his last hand card. This was a heavy mistake, Maqi would had needed to trade his Bloodbraid for my FTK and had needed to chumpblock his Fyndhorn Elves to my Doran. In this case Maqi would only had his Falkenrath against my Doran and my Hellkite. So with this decision to play it defensive and safely I saved his Fyndhorn Elves and he used it for his Falkenrath which kept my Hellkite away from Maqi's last lifepoint. Then next turn I decided to attack with all 3 creatures leaving him only his Falkenrath, 2nd main phase I play Vinidicate on the Liliana to keeping the pressure(Liliana had 2 counetrs),eot he flashes Aven Mindcensor. In the final turn as I was down on one life Maqi topdecked Arc Trail.

Game2:
I had a good start with turn 1 Avacyn's Pilgrim and turn 2 Doran. Maqi's first play Qasali Pridemage was then anhilated by my FTK. The next plays were a Scavenging Ooze on my side and a Doran from Maqi's side. The both Doran killed each other, and my Scavenging ooze could grow this way. For the final turns I had a good board position even against a Anafenza and and an Eternal Witness both appearing on Maqi's side of the battlefield.

Game3:
In this game we both had a good start, I had turn1 Aether Vial and turn 2 Sylvan Library, Maqi had turn 1 Llanowar Elves and turn 2 Fauna Shaman + Thoughtseize. Maqi then destroyed my Pilgrim with Lightning Helix, I paid 8 life for finding the turn 3 drop Lingerings Souls + the Aether Vial Drop Sylvan Caryatid. Next Maqi searched with his Fauna Shaman the Scavenging ooze for removing Lingering Souls before I can use flashback. I cast my Demonic Tutor for Arc Trail destroying his Ooze and his Elf, meanwhile I had Anafenza for the Aether Vial. After this Maqi didn't find another land and could only cast Duress and Noble Hierach. With my Bloodbraid Elf I finished the game.

Game 4:
I kept a slow hand with 3 lands Sylvan Library, 2 Garruks and Path to Exile. Maqi started this game quick with turn 1 Noble Hierach and turn 2 Fauna Shaman + Thoughtseize (exactly as in game 3), I had to discard my Sylvan Library. Maqi had Anafenza and Sword of Feast and Famine while I drawed only lands. As I played both Garruks(one after another), I were already in a bad board position and so I lost against Maqi's Tainted Pact fetching him Liliana of the Veil.

Game 5:
Again we both had a quick start on my side with turn 1 Deathrite Shaman and turn 2 Dark Confidant, Maqi had turn 1 Birds of Paradise and turn 2 Anafenza. Turn 3 I destroyed his Anafenza with a Swords to Ploshares, Maqi played Doran and Noble Hierach. Next turn I revealed Abrupt Decay with my Confidant and played Garruk Wildspeaker + Lotus Cobra + Abrupt Decay for his Doran. Maqi then only answers with an Fauna Shaman. With the untap ability from Garruk I can play Obzedat,G.C. The next card Maqi drawed were the Llanowar Elves with he searched his library for Siege Rhino while his Birds of Paradise(with exalted) kept my Garruk from the Overrun ability. In the final turn I use Demonci Tutor for Path to Exile and attacked lethal.

captain-kaiiak (4C Blood) vs Vazdru (4C Blood)

he rolled 2, then me 1 so he started g1

g1: he keeps first hand with 2 Fetchlands, Thoughtseize, Lightning Bolt, Lightning Helix, Reclamation Sage + Obzedat. I have 3 lands, GSZ, Tarmogoyf, Finks and Inquisition of Kozilek. He took my Tarmogoyf with Toughtseize and i played Stirring Wildwood which is surely disputable. Anyhow he "topdecked" Tarmogoyf for T2. I played Inquisition for Lightning Helix. He got Horizon Canopy next turn, i have Finks which got killed once by Lightning Bolt. I drew Restoration Angel + Goldgari Charm he had to play Reclamation Sage + Hierarch. Restoration Angel had nice interaction with Finks and Golgari Charm cleared board on his side. I drew SoFI next but his Ajani kept Restoration Angel tapped for a while (i should have equipped tapped angel probably  :)). He was still on 4 lands, i dropped some more and was able to attack with Treetop Village, Wildwood + Finks when he had only Goyf as blocker. As Finks + Restoration Angel + my Manlands + his Canopy and Fetchlands already took him down to 5 lp this was gg.

g2: he keeps first hand with 2 lands, Tarmogoyf, Lingering Souls, Courser, Xenagos, Obzedat. I have 3 lands, Duress, Lili (but no second B), Destructive Revelery, Falkenrath. He plays land - go, my Duress took Xenagos - maybe i should have taken Souls (he had 2 lands) but i wanted to keep him away of playing Tokens while I've had Lili. T2 he dropped Goyf. Crucial moment - he topdecked white mana source, I've got second black source for Lili -> i thougth to myself: if he playes Souls I will lose this game because Lila become immediately a dead card and i have no drops to stop Goyf or Tokens...he tapped for mana and played .... Courser - good for me, bad for him. Eot Destructive Revelery (btw: added this card to improve my MU vs ChristophO which could have been my opponent in Semifinals) to kill Courser, T3 Lili for Sacrifice Goyf leaving him with an empty board. He plays tokens next turn, I topdecked KotR which was awesome as i was able to attack his weak manabase and furthermore Knight was already "monstrous". I misplayed Wasteland (leaving him one black source) let him flashback Tokens but my blunder wasn't punised that hard this time... Thrun joined my army while tokens killed Lili and started to attack my lifecount together with an Ooze. But when i attacked with Thrun + 7/7 Knight he had to start to chumpblock. Then I dropped Elspeth when he had almost nothing left. Game crashed somehow as he lost connection... as he is a fair player he gave me that win - imo there were no outs left for him to stay alive next turn as i've had Elspeth, Thrun, KotR (7/7), Soldier + Tainted Pact in hand while he had Pilgrim, 1 Token + 3 lands.

g3: he took free-mulligan having 2-lander again (no black) with Confidant, Inquisition, Grim Lavamancer, Pridemage + Ranger of Eos - he kept his next hand: 2-lands (4th time in a row  :-[) Elves, Anafenza, Courser, Mother of Runes + Garruk Wildspeaker. My first seven looked like: 2 lands + Elf, Voice, Lightning Helix, SoFI + Garruk Relentless...i pondered and took a free mulligan as 2-lander was still risky, Voice + SoFI were unimpressive in this mu. After free-mulligan i've had: 4 lands, Lightning Bolt, Hmyn + BB-Elf which I've kept. His T1 Elf got Bolted (which was the crucial moment of that game imo), T2 he had land go and i play Hymn ...then my computer took a time-out and I've had to reboot. Once again kai was quite fair and kept game open till i could rejoin ...Hymn resolved
for discarding Anafenza + Garruk. T3 I've had Mindcensor and BB-Elf joined the army T4 cascading into Thoughtseize. He revealed: Mother, Restoration Angel, Lightning Helix and Courser with Badlands, Blackcleave Cliffs + Bayou on Board. I took Courser. He topdecks Pilgrim but white mana would have been obv. better. At this moment I've had 4 lands in play and 3 on hands so I was in topdeck-mode and got Council's Judgement which killed Pilgrim and another swing for 5 dam. He got overgrown tomb from the top which wasn't enough.

Thanks for the ggs and thanks for being that fair player!

Goblin Piledriver(4C-Blood)  vs  Vazdru(4C-Blood)
3:0

Game1:
I kept a hand with 2 Lands, an Elf, Aether Vial, 2 Spells and a Planeswalker. Vazdru kept a 6 card hand: 2 Lands 3 Spells and a Planeswalker. vazdru started this game with a turn 3 Liliana of the Veil while I had allready Aether Vial on 1 counter, I discarded Lingering Souls for his Liliana ability. On my turn 3 i played Blighning to his Liliana and attacked for the final 4th damage, so on his side there where only 3 lands and 1 handcard left. Vazdru kept Maelstrom Pulse over Knight of the Reliquary as his only handcard. 2 turns later Vazdru had 5 lands and I had lost my planeswalker(Ajani Vengeant),so I had 4 lands, Ather Vial, 2 Elfes and Eladmri's Call on my hand. Vazdru drew Demonic Tutor and played Tarmogoyf, I searched with my Call Thundermaw Hellkite and finished the game 2 turns later with the flashbacked Lingering Souls Tokens and an activated Raging Ravine.

Game2:
This time we both kept our first hands. I had 3 lands 2* 2 mana creatures and 2 Spells. Vazdru had 2 lands, Aether Vial, 2 Spells, 1 Planeswalker and an Eternal Witness.
Second turn Vazdru played Thoughtseize on my Abrupt Decay leaving me only Demonic Tutor as a nonpermanent Spell on my hand, on my second turn I played Tarmogof as a 2/3 creature. Vazdru didn't found his third land so he played Green Sun's Zenith for Birds of Paradise, I had my third land and played Phyrexian Arena. Next turn Vazdru aether vialed Eternal Witness for returning his fetchland as his third land, so he plays Liliana of the Veil destroying my Tarmogoyf. Then i played Elspeth, Knight-Errant. Turn 5 Vazdru played Sword of Fire and Ice equiping his Eternal Witness. I searched Arc Trail with my Demonic Tutor destroying his Birds of Paradise and his Liliana. Vazdru turned his Aether Vial on 5 counters, played Path to Exile on my solider token and drewed Scavenging Ooze to his fifth land. In my next turn I played Falkenrath Arisocrat which attacked Vazdru to 8 life plus Voice of Resurgence to protect my 12 lifes. Vazdru drew nothing relevant and I played it defensive with Doran and Lilian of the Veil. Next turn the game was over.

Game3:
Vazdru free mulliganed 2 lands 2 2*mana creatures, Lightning Bolt and 2* 4mana Drops till he had a 6 card hand with 2 lands, an Elf, Eternal Witness, Discard Spell and a Planeswalker. I kept my second hand with 3 lands, Tainted Pact and 3* 4Drops. Turn 2 Vazdru played Inquisition of Kozilek for my Tainted Pact and attacked with his Elf into my(fresh drewed) Mother of Runes(which was summoning sick). Turn 3 I drewed Thoughsteize for his Eternal Witness. We both had found our forth land for Garruk Relentless on his side and for Bloodbraid Elf cascading into Sword of Feast and Famine. Turn 5 Vazdru destroys with a Tectonic Edge my Raging Ravine, I drew another land and I played Butcher of the Horde. Vazdru didn't found his second white land for Elspeth, Knight-Errant and could only play Sword of Fire and Ice . Next I played Ajani Vengeant destroying his Wolf and I equipped my Butcher so that Vazdru discards his Elspeth. The next two turns Vazdru destroys with Maelstrom Pulse my Ajani vengeant and with Vithian Renegades my Sword. My Butcher of the Horde was left unhandled and dealt the last damages.
